Improve Readability - Browse Through Magazines and Catalogues to
Get Design and Layout Ideas for Your Ebook
Never accept Word's
defaults!
Too many ebooks have small,
cramped margins. Don't let your type begin about half an inch in
from the left hand side of the (virtual) page and march across
to the right hand side without a break.
This can be a bad design
choice for many reasons.

Many, if not most,
ebook readers immediately print out their ebooks as soon as
they download them. With small margins, there is no space to
hold the paper. A reader has to constantly move their hands
to keep from covering the writing!

Most readers, when
confronted by dense blocks of type, skim instead of read.
If you want your readers to read your ebook, give
them areas to pause, to rest their eyes, and to digest the
information. Use white space to set off important points, by
allowing extra space before headings.

Professionally printed
books never fill the page from side to side and top to
bottom. We may not all be trained designers, but we are
sophisticated media consumers. Most readers know
instinctively - even if they can't explain - how a printed
page should look. Chapter headings have extra space above
and below. Technical books have wide outside margins to
allow for notations (both printed and handwritten). The size
of the type is in balance with the size of the page.
Change your page layout to
make reasing easier.

Try adding a little
extra white space by increasing the top margin. A printed
page usually has more white space at the top than at the
bottom.

Allow sufficient room
at the top and the bottom of the page for headers and
footers.
Don't be afraid to open up
your ebook. Your printer isn't charging by the page! A 40 page
ebook will cost no more to produce than a 25 page ebook. Design
your book with the reader's pleasure as your first concern.
